Kya: Dark Lineage
What do you get when you mix a splash of American McGee’s Alice with a dash of NiGHTS: into dreams, a large helping of Legend of Zelda and wrap it all in a decent coming-of-age fantasy story with some daddy issues and Tarzan-esque vine surfing thrown in?
Well you get a pretty nifty little Playstation 2 game called Kya: Dark Lineage that I picked up some time ago for five bucks. I’ve been playing alot of PS2 lately and between bouts of Katamari Damacy I’ve mostly been checking out games I missed (like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Yes. I hadn’t played it til recently.)
I heard about Kya from a Games Radar aritcle and it piqued my interest. I’ve only played about 4 or 5 hours of it total (and I’m currently stuck actually) so consider this a first impression.

There's that vine surfing I told you about.
The game begins with the titular Kya, a young girl (woman? Her age is a little unclear) with blue dreadlocks and a midriff shirt. Despite being obviously designed with some Disneyesque sex appeal in mind she is a likable character. One night her half-brother finds a secret work area behind a wall in their house, it turns out to be the study of Kya’s father who left her years ago. While Kya is being all angsty about that her brother, now seemingly posessed, opens a portal to an alternate dimension where, surprise! Daddy has been ruling as tyrannical dark wizard.
You get all that?
Although it’s pretty clear Kya was doomed to one-shot obscurity the game shows genuine effort. Although the character design is a bit lackluster and could use some work the illustrative graphical style of the game is undeniably gorgeous. I normally hate excessively comparing games to other games when I describe them but the smooth, cartoony, colorful backgrounds really are akin to Alice. Except, you know, without all the blood and trauma and creepiness obviously.
The world Kya finds herself in is home to a battle between the Nativs and the evil Wolfen, however it turns out the Wolfen are just Nativs who were altered by dark wizard daddy. You’re given a basic goal in each level and along the way you need to beat up and exorcise Wolfen you encounter. As you do this the Nativ village fills up and expands and you can buy more items and such. There are a couple of other animals like a piggie you can use as a springboard and some flying fish that electrocute you, and some screenshots I’ve seen suggest you later get to ride some variety of creature. Although sparse in enemies and critters the levels are still rich in detail.
The combat system is surprisingly deep and very well done, it’s real-time and you use button combos for different punching and kicking moves. Sometimes you’re even treated to an artsy slow-motion angle when you K.O. a baddie. You can also purchase a boomerang for Kya which she adorably keeps hooked to her ponytail when not in use. You can also get a variety of items such as bombs, a magic surfboard for the aforementioned vine surfing sections and special gloves that allow you to climb vines. The levels are full of all sorts of switches, mini-puzzles, coins, spring piggies and wind cannons so the platforming aspect is actually uniquely varied and quite fun.
Ah yes, wind cannons. It seems the Natvis use wind as a major form as transportation (aside from magic vine surfing of course) and thats where the rather NiGHTSy aspects come in. In several areas you’re tasked with navigating Kya through thorny caves and outcroppings as she basically flies using powerful gusts of wind.
The voice acting in the game is surprisingly pretty good as well, although a tad cheesey as if the actors were sure they were recording for a game aimed at little kids.
I have become a bit frustrated with a few game aspects though. There was a particularly long surfing section in one level and it was really easy to fall of the sides. So every time I did I had to start from the beginning. The map is also a little frustrating and there is no mini-map. I eventually opened these wind elevators that allowed me to quick travel to different areas, but each elevator has four options and they only have a picture of the area without a written name, so if I’m supposed to be in a certain section in order to reach a certain goal I can’t always remember which picture is what area.
But, if you’ve been looking for some cheap-ass Ps2 games to buy you can’t really go wrong with this one. For five measly bucks it’s worth checking out.

Man I remember my mom getting my little brother this game years ago. He absolutely loved it. He played it through to the end so many times I lost count. It really is a nice game. Now I’m kinda interested in playing it :<. I never played it back then but I have time now.
I wonder where that game is now D8.
I would like to say that there aren't enough characters in games with dreads.

It’s great to find another kya dark lineage fan! Kya dark lineage fans are hard to come by. I absolutley love kya dark lineage, it is my second favorite game behind the suikoden series. Kya dark lineage is such a great game that no one knows about, and it deserves a sequel especially becuase it has a cliffhanger ending! That’s why i made a kya forum and have been trying to gather fans to try and get the creators to make a sequel, it also seems to be that they wouldn’t mind making a sequel but thier publishers won’t let them.

@Hotspot: For all Kya has going for it unfortunately I don’t think it was really strong enough to become a new breakout IP that would launch a franchise.
But hey, being a cult classic isn’t so bad either :p my own favorite game is.

Correct me if i’m wrong but you haven’t beaten it yet right? you’ll probabally like it better as you get further in the game. I understand what you mean, there are alot of things that they could’ve changed. This also means that if there is a sequel they could fix all of these things that could have been better. I remember on an internet forum someone said that he prefers it when games don’t have sequels, (ironically the forum was for the disgaea games, which has two sequels) On a side note alot of people find kya alot like the early legend of zelda games and some people don’t like it becuase of this, they think that the creators tried to rip off zelda by making a game like it. And in an interview with the creators they said they tried to make it a little like the legend of zelda so that people would want to play kya, or it was something like that.

@HotSpot Well like I said in the review, the character designs are kind of lackluster and the world is kind of empty. It has genuine effort and artistry in it but it just isn’t quite there. It’s unpolished I guess.
Most people are going to be hooked by a game within the first hour or so, and while I’ve enjoyed the gameplay and the excellent battle system nothing has really drawn me in even after 5 hours of play. I will beat it eventually, like I said I got kinda stuck because of the annoying quick travel system so I’ll have to get back to it with some GameFAQ help.
Sequels aren’t always a good thing. The Nights sequel was terrible. Then you have re-imagining of old games like Bionic Commando and Bomberman which reek of Dark Age 90’s comics “extreme” and “gritty” makeovers. I’m certain the sequel to Bioshock, which REALLY should be a stand-alone game, is going to be a mediocre cash-in.
When it comes to cult classics or games that never moved beyond their first iteration there were just so many factors at the time that made it what it was and you really can’t duplicate something like that.
P.S. The only part I really felt was strongly Zelda-like was the shops. The music even sounded kind of similar, but maybe it was an homage. But there’s nothing wrong with adopting the Zelda formula to new concepts. Hell, look at Okami.

I don’t understand how you find the artwork not that good but everyone is different. although one time i found kya being one of the worst character artwork ever on an article on gamesradar . and i was so angry i replied saying she wasn’t bad and then i sent a bunch of the members of my kya forum onto the site so they could express thier feelings towards it too. it was a fine victory even though there hasn’t been any response from the person who made the article.
Now i don’t fully agree with getting hooked on a game in an hour, there’s a couple of games that i didn’t get hooked on until a couple of hours. not to mention games that i didn’t like at first and then later i liked it after trying it again.
if you need any help with kya you can always ask me, i have beaten kya atleast 4 times and i am the only one that knows alot about kya that i probabally only come second to the creators. i can easily tell you that the bouncy pigs are called mickens and that the creature you ride is called a jamgut and that later on you get to ride another version that is purple, faster and called a royal jamgut. also the green spikey monsters are sinocs and the electric fish are called shocker. I could also tell you that there are three different types of nooties, two are obvious but there’s another one that is disguised as a normal nootie.
It’s deffinatley possible that a sequel can go bad, alot of suikoden fans hated suikoden four for many reasons ( one reason was the artwork) although being a true suikoden fan i easily enjoyed it.
i never played any zelda games so i wouldn’t know about that, i only heard it but i didn’t understand why people said it was like zelda, but now i know a reason.
