5 Common Anime Criticisms That I Hate
A few years ago on my deviantART account I put up a post I called the “Supah Funtime Anime Rant“. I always claimed I’d repost it on this site eventually, but since I’m an unoriginal whore and have gotten into the habit of ripping off the popular list humor format seen on every website in the world I decided to adapt the general idea of part one to this post. To the 3 people who actually remember the original: consider this a spiritual successor.
Now yes, I’m a fan of Japanese cartoons if that wasn’t blatantly obvious to anyone with a pair of working corneas. And yes, weeaboo, they’re cartoons, get over it. Naturally the East and West have distinctively different approaches and different schools of thought when it comes to comic books, cartooning and animation and both sides of the world have particular underlying techniques and ticks throughout.
But it irks me to no end when people go on about anime sucking because of something common to most cartoons in the world. Sure, you don’t have to like anime, but it’s my pet peeve and my website damnit! So here’s my list:
#1. Anime Characters Are Disproportioned!
I don’t understand this one myself. Are all cartoons, nay all art in general, expected to follow strictly realistic human proportions? Applying this complaint to anything else would seem unreasonable as best and puppy-neck-snappingly retarded at worst. According to modern figure drawing the average human body is about 7/7.5 head lengths tall, although idealized classical figures could be as much as 8 or 9 head lengths tall. What this means is that a proportionally correct person would be drawn as tall as their head repeated 7 times.
Let’s compare:

So how come Disney gets away with it guys?
#2. Anime Characters Have Big Heads!
I could just say “see above” in this instance but then I wouldn’t be a very good snarky internet writer would I?
Let’s do another comparison, this time showing the characters’ total heights with their heads all sized roughly the same:

The differences are pretty drastic huh? Of course there are alot of “chibi” anime styles wherein the head is purposefully drawn huge and the body is drawn stylized and “super deformed” but I’m going by the most average builds I can. As you may have noticed all of these characters have over-sized heads anyway, because you’d be hard pressed to find a toon that doesn’t. Also why do most American toon women seem to have tattooed on lipstick?
#3. Why do Anime Characters Have Big Eyes!?
Why do American toons have four fingers? Really, what does that mean? And you know what else?
MOST CARTOON CHARACTERS HAVE OVER-SIZED EYES.

Except Doug and Charlie Brown. But screw them.
Seriously though humans respond to eyes almost more than anything else in a picture. Get the eyes right and alot of other flaws will be forgiven, at least by the laymen. Cartoons stylize everything but eyes and heads are particularly exaggerated because that’s what we notice first and that’s what we’re drawn to because that’s how we recognize something as representing a human being (or at least an anthropomorphized being. You get the point.)
#4. Disney is BETTER!
Yes you sure showed those anime fans by implying that Japanese television animation is even comparable to American multi-million dollar full-length animated features! Pat yourself on the back, dumbass. By the way, have you noticed Disney has been feverishly dubbing and distributing practically everything in Studio Ghibili’s library over the last few years? A much smaller Japanese animation studio responsible for traditionally animated full-length theatrical films that are far superior to anything Disney has produced in the last 10 years or so?
Not to mention that in 2003 Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away (a film Disney was responsible for giving a North American theartrical release) beat out the likes of not only Ice Age but Disney’s own Treasure Planet and Lilo & Stitch to the Oscar for “Best Animated Film.”

Suck on that!
#5 ALL ANIME LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME!

No.
In Conclusion…
Sure, some anime does suck for legitimate reasons, just like some American cartoons suck, some books suck, some movies suck, etc. But you don’t write off an entire media for stupid, stupid reasons. In the end the whole American animation vs. Japanese animation argument doesn’t matter… because it’s all produced in Korea these days anyway.

All very good points but you’ve managed to hit a pet peeve of mine. You put the chick from Total Drama Island under “Typical American TV Toons” even though TDI is Canadian. D:
6:56 pm on August 8th, 2009
D: … is it? I actually know nothing about the show aside from it being fairly typical of current cartoon style trends.
Maybe I should have used Frankie from Foster’s.

I like the look of anime, but I can’t really stand to watch it anymore – especially when they use obnoxious voice actors in the English versions and totally destroy the original storylines. (American version of Sailor Moon comes to mind here… and I used to like that version before I got to see the Japanese version when it was still available on youTube.)
I’m too poor to buy the DVD’s straight from Japan and I’m against pirating media from the Internet…. so yeah.

Oh yes what is it with some people that for some reason the mere mention of anime around them sends them into a foaming mouthed rage and the same peeves you listed above. I just shrug and think “wow… retard” because although your arguments are great and all – those mouthbreathing wankers are never going to listen to anything coherent and logical.
Anyway, yeh – I’ll watch whatever cartoons I please thanks – what are they the entertainment police?
9:01 pm on August 8th, 2009
I agree with everything you’ve mentioned, especially the in conclusion part. I hate when anime is bashed for, well, being anime :\ Like I never hear people saying because they dont like, i dont know, Superjail! [which i love btb] that all of a sudden clone high sucks D: and yet they’ve never seen it. [I have had that happen to me before afjajkfhajkhsfja]
Oh and #5… made me giggle haha.
All in all very good rant, entertaining and agreeable

Ugh bad typo on my post: I’ve heard people say* not I never hear people saying -_-

Have you seen the dubbed previews for Ponyo? Not. Happy. Miyazaki and his crew of awesomeness are genius and Disney’s taken a nosedive recently. I like old Disney. Can we have Old Disney back? It’d be nice.
Oh yeah, don’t forget that my Grams is certain that the Japanese are brainwashing us foreign-cartoon watching kiddies so they’ll be able to take over America just that more easily. I guess that means the Chinese are, too, since she thinks the same thing about the mandarin dramas I like to watch. And Korean dramas and movies… and damn, just about every other Asian country.
[But not the UK. God forbid she starts attacking my Torchwood and Doctor Who. Or she's just racist against Asians.]
8:43 am on August 9th, 2009
Yes! This!
I’m also rather annoyed when people think that “anime” is a genre of its own rather than a medium and that therefore that if they don’t like one anime, they won’t like any. It’s the same with manga or Western comics.
Someone mentioned dubs above: the main thing about dubs that really annoys me is when they give English characters American accents. L and the other Wammy House boys from Death Note spring to mind. They’re from WINCHESTER, damnit! D:
Oh, and censoring anime because “it’s all for kids”. 4Kids took all the fun out of Yu-Gi-Oh!. Curse you, 4Kiiiiids!

CANADA IS IN AMERICA MISS

This was entertaining. I pretty much have the same problem with most people I know… that and they always assume they won’t like any just because they feel that all of them are exactly the same – kinda like what other people have said. One time in art class we had to do a poster for homework and we only had one evening to do it, so I drew it anime style and it turned out pretty good (don’t have it any more unfortunatelly) although I did have my sister’s help for certain bits I couldn’t seem to get right (we were aloud help). Anyways, so it got the point I was trying to make across etc. but because the teacher was unfamiliar with the style at the time she didn’t know what to say about it… that and we had to come up with original characters that weren’t copyrighted; my character was completely original anyway so it shouldn’t have been a problem -that reminds me… the poster was for a competition- so some wise guy idiot decides to stick his big ugly mug into the conversation and be all like ‘isn’t anime copyrighted?’ this ended up turning into a whole debate between me and the rest of the class who were adamant that the (already mentioned before) medium was copyrighted… of course the idiotic teacher agreed and decided that I couldn’t use that poster in the competition. This was foolish though, it’s not like I was using someone else’s character or anything and they all knew that considering they were all familiar with mainstream pokemon and I guess yu-gi-oh and the like. It’s almost like the whole place was missing the point… how would there be more than one anime by different companies etc if the style had been copyrighted as soon as it had come into play? Ironically i took art for GCSE and got an A.
Why are some people so stupid.
Llrael, don’t worry too much about accents. The thing is most dubs are done in America etc so sometimes it would be hard for them to find people with the right specific accents; that and if the American actor tried to do the accent, it would probably sound even more annoying. However, if the voice is annoying in general and such then I agree.
12:41 pm on August 9th, 2009
@ Nathaniel Canada IS in America! NORTH AMERICA! HA!
@ Llrael I doubt they had an accent in the original Japanese. I mean they didn’t sound like they did :p If I recall though the Hellsing dub was good about giving people British accents.
2:30 pm on August 9th, 2009
If you want to beef up #5 some more, throw in Kaiba, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, anything by Studio 4c, Casshern Sins, Denno COIL and Mitchiko and Hatchin. Because, damn. So much variance there.
(Also, as a native brit… Hellsing’s dub is preeeetty painful. XD)
6:57 pm on August 9th, 2009
@ KT:Well sure to REAL Brits it is, but at least they TRIED XD
Man if I tried to go through every even remotely unique looking anime off the top of my head that picture would be impossibly huge.
10:35 pm on August 9th, 2009
This is intelligent, but still poignant with the bitter after-taste of a rant. Bravo, this is well written.
12:59 pm on August 10th, 2009
Funny and true. Nicely written as well – which always highlights the inteligence of the person placing the argument. I showed this to an anime hating aquaintance of mine…he had nothing to say in responce
To echo previous comments, bravo.

Thanks for stickin’ it to ‘em!
By the way, I left a comment on your Elfen Lied article.
I do love several of the series that your screenshots for ‘all anime isn’t the same’ image. Shinchan and Eureka 7 rock.
7:42 pm on August 11th, 2009
xDDD I thought this was a well done article first and foremost.
Secondly I about died laughing at the sentence where you said most of it was made in korea anyways.
it made my day.
but if someone ever says that disney/american is soooo different i will link them to this article xD

I love the pikachu picture… XD
9:03 pm on August 12th, 2009
<3 Thank you for that. I love your rants. But this isn't one of those "BAWWW I'M ANGRY!!!!11'" rants, but more of an intelligent rant backed up with examples and info. C: Those are the rants worth reading.
4:34 pm on August 13th, 2009
why characters have 4 fingers?

it´s very easy
that was done because one got bored of drawing all five fingers and after that, it became a part of the style
*got told in a documentary about cartoon/comic artists*
And I thought it was normal with 8 heads. Not 7
And damn… Dubbed anime is terrible…
BUT Trigun on english is very~ recommended!
The only anime that fits the American dialect as the story is supposed to be in a western-ish planet
Some voiceactors are very skilled, but sometimes… their talents gets wasted by making them voice the wrong personality or the reaction and volume in the voices are totally different like in Anime which the characters are pretty much standing still while in American cartoons, their arms and entire bodies are in constant motions
And Have someone seen animation from Europe?
there is some animations like Lucky Luke, Tin Tin and Sprint that is very entertaining both in art style and script
I recommend to watch at those styles as well, since I feel talking about western and Eastern styles involves only Japan and America ^^;;
This was a very nice article.
Nice comparisons.
And I really liked how you didn´t take anys side.
I enjoyed reading it
4:49 pm on August 13th, 2009
@ Grethe
Well from what I know it wasn’t so much boredom as it was considered that four fingers was just easier to draw, I’d imagine so on the beefy glove-like hands of older cartoon characters. But my point was just as the four finger thing has pervaded most Western toons so did big shiny eyes most Japanese toons.
7-7.5 is considered standard these days, I could be wrong though.
I’ve seen Plague Dogs, I can’t really think of many other European animations I’ve seen.
6:55 pm on August 13th, 2009
@ Sai
okey
I´m sorry I went off-topic from your sentence.
you got a great point there.
ah, I´ve just been used to the 8 system, but of course there could be other
thanks for learning me a new thing.
I have never seen pleague dogs.
I better do
Thanks for your respond.

You’re so right!
The only thing I don’t like about TV anime series is music. I love FMA Brotherhood but I’m annoyed by the dramatic track they play in every episode >..<
1:29 pm on August 20th, 2009
@ Kiadony: Yeah I noticed that in Brotherhood, the music editing is WEIRD, it seems to keep playing over scenes it shouldn’t.

Nice find! i never relized those things before. I really dislike any american animation that isn’t teen titans, so to me most american cartoons suck. But i think anime is way better, plus they are more detailed. I like to draw and my characters are very animeish not nessesarily on purpose though but i do try to make everything right ( 5 fingers, same length for arms, legs, make sure to add ears unless the character is i na pose that would hide ears, especially if it s a loong haired girl so the hair hides the ears( i used to not put ears on when i was younger) eyes are normal and not larger than the face ususally, and the most important thing, it has to make sense. You always have to make sure that if it was real it would look like that, so this way the person isn’t disfigured and so it doesn’t come out to be that this persons arm isn’t actually attached to his/her shoulder.)
4:12 pm on September 23rd, 2009
@ Hotspot: Well lack of detail in American television cartoons isn’t entirely true. Cartoons in the 90’s were great, we had stuff like Rocko, Hey Arnold, Ren & Stimpy, Dexter’s Lab and the various Ruegger cartoons (Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Histeria, Pinky and the Brain, Batman, Freakzoid, etc.)
It’s just now almost everything that isn’t animated in Korea either looks like it was or actually was animated with Flash. It just isn’t the same.

Anime is sterile, static and expressionless.
If you need to use onomatopoeias in an animated medium to convey your character’s emotions, you’re doing it wrong, very fucking wrong.
Besides, it’s been the same shit since Ozamu Tezuka developed the style…more than 60 years ago!
It doesn’t surprise me at all that when tweenage animu fans grow up they become occidental cartoon and comic fans, once you’re past the claws of popularity and discover there’s a million movies, books and graphic novels with much better storylines than any anime ever written, it suddenly doesn’t seem to be that awesome.
3:17 pm on June 20th, 2010
@Me “once you’re past the claws of popularity and discover there’s a million movies, books and graphic novels with much better storylines than any anime ever written, it suddenly doesn’t seem to be that awesome”
Truth. I grew up on anime and I still watch it often, but I haven’t come across an excellent story line in… years. Ironically enough, it has not only returned me to reading novels, it has sent me to reading CLASSICS. During the fall out of anime, it makes you appreciate story a heck of a lot more than you used to. I don’t put up with crap anymore. You can put Twilight on the same shelf as a lot of popular anime and not feel too guilty about it.
Animators drew four fingers instead of five because it was cheaper. In animation, time is actually money. Someone is paid to draw 12 drawings per second. If you can shave 20 minutes of their time by having them draw four fingers instead of five, that’s profit.
LOL! Thank you for the Korea comment. That is most certainly true of animation made for television- no matter what country the concept originates in.
8:08 pm on June 28th, 2010
Just to add another option in the pot: I once heard the reason they drew four fingers was because sometimes in fast-moving scenes five fingers actually end up looking like six. So they started drawing characters with four fingers that, when they moved, still looked like they had five. Then it just stuck.
Dunno how accurate that is, though. Just sayin’.
And, to beat a dead horse, yes Canada is American. So is Mexico.

One understands that humen’s life is not cheap, nevertheless we need cash for different stuff and not every person earns enough cash. Thence to get good personal loans or college loan would be a proper way out.
9:48 am on July 15th, 2010
Shin-chan is the only thing that really looks different from the others in that line-up.
6:35 am on July 26th, 2010
I love you for this ;w;
I especially hate how people say I don’t have my own style cuz I draw Manga style, even though I came up with MY drawing style ALL by myself
(I also have an american cartoon style based off the animated LotR and somehow they’re ok with that >____>)

I’m really to be finally posting online after all these years. There really is no mystique (sp) about it, is there? I just dropped by your blog and had to write something. I’m a recent college grad, journalism major if you must know, and I love photography. I’ve got my website up but it’s nothing to boast about yet. None of my stuff’s been posted. Soon as I figure out how to do that, I’ll spend the day posting my best pictures. anyhow just thought I’d drop a line. I hope to return with more substantial stuff, stuff you can actually use. SPG
