5 Anime You’ve Never Heard Of (But Need To See)
You kids today with your Narutos and your Inuyashas. You don’t know anime fandom. Oh yeah, you think you’re all hardcore cause you know how to use Bit Torrent? Yeah well back in my day I’d spend an hour sitting on the floor of a video store, rummaging through the shelves trying to find at least one over-priced thirty dollar subtitled VHS of The Slayers. Back then, we actually had a reason to hate dubs, they were more atrocious and embarrassing to listen to than you could possibly imagine. And you wanna complain about the voices in Death Note? You can go to hell!
But before you fling yourself into eternal flames of torment at my behest, read this list I’ve compiled of a few anime you’ve never heard of but you really should see. And if you comment saying you’ve heard of them I’ll consider you obnoxious.
#1: Dragon Half
The Dragon Half OVA only has two episodes to its name but it is by far one of the funniest animes ever made. I’m not even exaggerating. In fact, recommend watching the dubbed version because its even funnier.
Dragon Half is… a little hard to explain. It’s just an incredibly silly fantasy series starring a girl named Mink who was the product of love between a dragon slayer and… the dragon he was supposed to slay. Although her parents are constantly fighting (often with fire and swords) Mink is a happy, normal girl. Except she has horns, wings and a scaley tail. Along with her two friends she embarks on a quest to get to a concert put on by her teen pop idol crush Dick Saucer, who is also a dragon slayer, who is hired to slay her by the king, and she’s completely oblivious to this as she vies for his affections. She also draws the ire of the king’s beautiful and deadly sorceress daughter Princess Veena… who happens to be the president of the Dick Saucer fan club.
Did you get all that? Well if you watch it or HAVE watched it and feel you’ve always wanted more the manga is even longer. And even more hilarious.
#2: Maho Tsukai Tai (Magic Users Club)
This is, in all honesty, one of my favorite animes ever. It’s original, its funny, the characters are all well-rounded and likable, and it’s just all and all an adorable series.
Maho Tsukai Tai is about a group of misfits who are members of the Magic Club at their school. The thing is, they really can do magic. The club was founded by Takeo, a somewhat perverted and girl-obsessed nerdy senior and his best friend Aya who is quite obviously gay and doesn’t even try to hide that he has the hots for him. The other members of the club are three girls: Sae, Nanaka and Akane. Despite actually having magic powers the club isn’t taken very seriously, their club space shared with and ever increasingly encroached upon by the Manga club. Takeo always fails to stand up for the Magic Club as the leader of the Manga Club is the arrogant primadonna Miyama who has bullied Takeo since they were children and always intimidates him with her *ahem* generous assets.
There’s an OVA which is pretty funny and has the Magic Club taking on a mysterious alien force that had invaded a year previously but remained dormant since (its not as dumb as it sounds.) But where the series really shines is in its 13 episode television incarnation. I would recommend seeing the OVA first, or the first episode of the television series will be rather confusing. However from there the series focuses mainly on hilarious hijinx, clever plotlines and character development and is quite enjoyable throughout.
#3: Twelve Kingdoms
I never heard of this series until I was commissioned to draw one rather obscure minor character from it. In an effort to figure out more about the character I was drawing I decided to check the series out and… got pretty hooked.
Twelve Kingdoms is kind of weird and epic and hard to describe, it is, however, a fantasy for sure (I know, I know. I’m … I’m a huge fantasy nerd.) When it starts out the main character seems like a godawful Mary Sue, and certainly parts of the show are kind of cheesy, but around episode 4 it really starts to pick up and never loses that pace staying action-packed and plot-focused. Basically it starts with your typical schoolgirl gets spirited away to some alternate/ancient/fantasy world plotline (ala Fushigi Yugi, Inuyasha, Escaflowne etc. upon etc.) but its really the characters, character interaction and fleshed out fantasy world that makes this series stand out. And you do see alot of characters. Normally that bothers me but Twelve Kingdoms handles its robust cast of main and minor characters well, it ties up loose ends and never lets characters overstay their welcome or fails to give them enough screen time.
The only real problem is the series just… stops. With no ending. It was just abruptly cancelled it seems. Luckily, its only the last 5 episodes or so that leave you hanging, before that there’s an epic ending to a long story arc that could have easily just been the series’ ending anyway.
#4: Galaxy Express 999
An interesting film based on a manga series it follows a young man named Tetsuro who lives in a future time where, for a small fortune, people are able to transfer themselves to machine bodies, gaining immortality and leaving human weaknesses behind. Tetsuro’s mother had been gunned down by a man called Count Mecha who basically hunted organic humans for sport and ever since Tetsuro has been obsessed with getting a machine body himself, something his mother had wished as she was sure it could improve their lives.
After meeting a mysterious woman named Maetel who rather resembles his late mother he gets the opportunity to travel to a planet where he’s heard machine bodies can be acquired for free. Maetel gets him a ticket on the Galaxy Express 999, a train that can fly through space, under the condition that he be her traveling companion. Along the way Tetsuro learns alot about himself, the world around him, and the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death, and his outlook begins to change. If you watch this movie, you may notice the many influences its had on countless other series and films.
And just for an added sense of context: Galaxy Express 999 is related to the Captain Harlock series.
#5: Please Save My Earth
A paced, very character-driven series Please Save My Earth may not be for everyone, but if you like drama and good character development you’ll find it interesting. Alice is a young girl in high school who can “listen” to plantlife and feels a strong attachment to nature. She has an odd and turbulent relationship with her young neighbor, a seven year old boy named Rin, who suffers an accidental fall off a balcony after he upsets Alice one night while she’s babysitting him. After the accident Rin begins to behave strangely, and Alice is drawn into a group by a couple of her classmates who are all having shared dreams about being strange people living in a technologically advanced building on the moon observing the Earth. Things only get stranger for the Alice and the group from there.
It’s a very compelling, well-animated and gorgeous series. The only problem is the OVA is only 6 episodes and adapted from a very long manga series so it’s quite clear the anime makers had trouble giving the OVA a solid conclusion. However, the manic and cluttered ending aside, its still a great series to watch while it lasts.
Tune in next time and I’ll bring you 5 Mangas You’ve Never Heard Of (and if you point out you have I’ll hate you.)

It’s good to see Leiji getting some love on the net, his art style is unique and wonderfully whimsical.
I haven’t seen Galaxy Express, but quite enjoyed Harlock – so I might get round to watching it.

ohh dragon half and please save our earth. excellent
one of my favorites that never gets enough credit is Here is Greenwood. Its silly and strange and wonderful. I don’t watch anime a lot anymore, but i still put it in and watch the 6 episodes at least once a month.

I’m really intrigued by Galaxy Express 999.
Though Dragon Half and Please Save my Earth also look fun.
Of course, that means adding more to my list of things I need to watch someday.

Slayers is *old*? It’s only been, what?, a little over a decade since it came out. It’s sad that a lot of people don’t want to watch something just because of it’s age. Older (ninties-ish) British comedy is *awesome*! …. Sorry, that’s what I’m watching now.
Dragon Half was an awesome anime, with fun, quirky songs and even more messed plots. It also has one of the best comedy relief characters ever. (“Damamaru-sama will live to regret this…” after he’s been sliced in the head for the umpteenth time.) I was so happy with the way the manga ended.
Twelve Kingdoms, what I saw of it–haven’t finished it yet, was the very definition of epic with the story of the other world, cast of characters and powers.
I have a couple other ones to add to the list, if I may, but they’re all short:
Bastard!! (some have heard of it, some haven’t) is funny, if for nothing else, the amount of 80’s metal bands that were used for a character or location name.
Ushio and Tora is another good, short anime. It actually seems like it was an inspiration for Yu Yu Hakusho.
Haunted Junction is quite possibly the funniest anime I’ve ever seen. It mixes Shinto, Buddhist, and Christian beliefs and several of the freakier things one sees as a fan. (Shota complexes and such…)
I hope you come up with some more!! ^_^

I LOVED Twelve Kingdoms. At first, I couldn’t believe how annoying and bratty and just, ugh the girl was, but over time she developed into a pretty likeable person, and of course, the various other stories were always interesting and fun to watch.
A couple others I would add to that list if it were say, a top ten, would be Baccano!, which is an absolutely awesome story about a bunch of immortals wandering around having crazy adventures.
And Pretear, which was basically the only magical girl show I ever liked, since the main character wasn’t whiny and irritating like the vast majority of them are, she was strong and independent. And the evil wasn’t just some random evil dimension, it was one girl, and the reason she was evil, well, there was one.

Dragon Half? A comedy?
OH! Now THAT I just GOTTA see! (Because I like Dragons and Anime) (8D
MangaPunkSai, is there a website where can I see this at?
I’ve HEARD of Dragon Half and Slayers before, but I’ve never even heard of the other four you listed. They all sound worth watching to some degree or another. ^_^
One thing I’ve noticed in most animes, like Inuyasha, Sailor Moon, and that Magic Club anime up there in the list, is that they mostly have FIVE main characters that the story mainly focuses on. (I guess anything over 5 main characters at once is sorta hard to keep track of.)
9:04 am on April 19th, 2009
@Xander
If you want a show with more than 5 main characters, try Legend of Galactic Heroes.
10:22 am on April 19th, 2009
I’ve heard of all of them. …Sorry, had to. I have, though, and always wanted to see them (thank you for reminding me). I was definitely part of that group that sat on the floor gawking at the vhs tapes and trying to decide which ones were worth spending my hard earned pet-sitting money on and which would have to wait. Slayers wound up in the ‘to-buy’ category, which meant I ran out before I could even consider anything else.

I’ve never actually heard of any of these. Although I think I stumbled across a clip of Please Save My Earth on YouTube once. I might be mistaken though and if I’m right I don’t know anything about it.

My Top 5 “Anime You’ve Never Heard Of [But Need to See]” would probably be
1) Revolutionary Girl Utena
2) Magic Knights Rayearth [No, you can't watch Tsubasa and skip the rest of Clamp's works.]
3) Key the Metal Idol
4) El Hazard
5) His and Her Circumstances

Lame. I know all though seen only 2: Galaxy Express 999 and Magic Users Club. You’re not the first person to recommend Please Save My Earth. I hear the manga is very very good.
Apparently Twelve Kingdoms, the novel, is also very very good.
And Dragon Half looks like sugared Boston cream doughnut by Crispy Creme: so sugary it’ll kill you.
12:43 pm on April 20th, 2009
@ Cicatriz
Well maybe Magical Knights Rayearth, El Hazard and Key the Metal Idol aren’t as well known as they once were, but His and Her Circumstances is pretty recent and I’m pretty sure Utena is still hella well known. But maybe thats just because it has a large gay following.
2:39 pm on April 20th, 2009
Hahahaha….I have watched them….and they rock!!!!! Well, except for save my earth, never heard of that one, but I’m definately gonna check it out.
5:37 pm on April 20th, 2009
I just have a thing for His and Her Circumstances because it’s an amazing example of Gainax doing something that isn’t “Boys in Robots” like Evangelion and Gurren Laggan.
Is Utena really that well known still? I was talking to some friends the other day and they said they’d never heard of it, which I was actually surprised of, but I just guessed that it wasn’t popular anymore.

I grew up watching Galaxy Express. When I was a kid I didn’t have any Anime sources, so I had to be content with what was on TV. Technoman, Dragon Ball, Vampire Hunter D… only recently did I actually finish watching Technoman. I don’t remember why it popped into my head, but it did so I finally finished it. I never really had the patience for Dragon Ball or DBZ, and I hear they’re making a live action movie out of it. *I* think it’s gonna suck. My MOTHER wants to see it because Jason Marsters is gonna play Piccolo.
Whatever! Anyway!
Later I discovered Slayers, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho and Hellsing. I can’t seem to get Vioh to give me the episodes of Slayers prior to Revolution… one of these days I’ll see all of them.
I did finish Inuyasha (I didn’t like the ending because it left room for more and there isn’t more…) and I finished YYH and I must say, I liked that ending a lot. I’ve heard there’s new episodes of Hellsing… I’m foaming at the mouth to see them.

@Cicatriz:
I guess you could say FLCL was “boys in robots” but… that was almost a parody of Eva among other things, and put across the same themes better than Eva ever did.
As for Utena, well its a pretty surreal series that completely changes tone in the middle of everything, so it never reached the popularity of longer running anime that end up on TV and all. But hell you still see alot of Utena cosplayers, I consider that a sign of well-knownness, I guess.
@Becca: That live action movie already game out. It’s pretty terrible just as everyone knew it would be. I don’t plan to see it…. well, maybe on DVD.

want to know a GREAT series that has NEVER come to the US? no one i talk to has ever heard of it and they claim to know everything about anime. anyways, the series is called “Ginga Nagareboshi Gin” sometimes called “Silver Fang.” i LOVE that series. sadly the manga scanlation is nonexistent past volume 3
11:23 am on September 22nd, 2009
i’ll look out for those, but i have seen 12 kingdoms, i am up to the eight volume! although it isn’t one of my favorite’s i don’t like it that much.
8:17 pm on September 26th, 2009
I think that i kind of gave the wrong idea about 12 kingdoms. the first couple of episodes were okay and then it got a little boring but after that, when a couple of episodes were following a boy named taiki (for those who don’t know the anime) then i started to really enjoy watching it. but then after it went back to youko it got a bit boring i think. And then when the characters suzu and shoukei were introduced as main characters i really got interested in it again to a point where i really wanted to watch the next episode. i really enjoy how suzu and shoukei’s thoughts of “the queen of kei” keep getting changed until they both like her. not to mention that shoukei and suzu accompany youko’s friend who both change the two girls thoughts about youko.
I also like how at the beginning youko was a girl that always needed someone to help her and she grows into someone who can do things on her own and isn’t afraid to fight anyone.
But i was greatly confused near the beginning when it seemed like they fast foward and all of a sudden sugimoto was back on earth and a lot happend but they didn’t really show what happend. I was like what? what what’s just happend???

The reason Twelve Kingdoms stopped production is it was hard for the animators to portray the inner struggles of chars. So, while it was a success, they were at their wits end and had to stop. I went on craze with Juuni Kokki a few years back and bought ALL the light novels in Japanese(and mind you, I can’t read Japanese >_<)
Anyway, there's translation on Yoko's story online.

The novel differs somewhat from the anime. One point being that her two friends are just minor npcs and never have anything to do with the plot. But I still like how they were in the anime. They do stand up as chars on their own.

Some time ago, I did need to buy a house for my firm but I did not have enough money and could not order something. Thank heaven my mother suggested to take the business loans at creditors. Thus, I did so and used to be happy with my secured loan.
